EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – When it comes to safety, price may not always matter.

The latest crash tests show that family cars actually outperform luxury models.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says that car buyers should know that the higher priced luxury cars may not always offer the best protection.

The 2013 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety top picks:

Midsize moderately priced cars:
Chrysler 200 4-door
Dodge Avenger
Ford Fusion
Honda Accord 2 & 4 door
Kia Optima
Nissan Altima 4 door
Subaru Legacy
Subaru Outback
Subaru Kizashi
Volkswagen Passat

Midsize luxury/near luxury cars:
Acura TL
Volvo S60

In the latest round of crash tests, cars were replicating what happens when the front corner of a car collides with another vehicle or a tree, the top performer in this test was the 2013 Honda Accord 4 door.

Toyota did not fair as well. Both of the Toyota’s tested earned poor ratings.

Only a handful of cars were tested in this crash test, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says it plans on evaluating additional models throughout the year.
