Time to prepare for winter weather

It's never too early to know about snow

(WPRI) - Native New Englanders have been through some rough winters, but sometimes cold weather can catch you off guard.

It is only a matter of time before residents across the Northeast will need to dust off their shovels. However, the National Weather Service says the time to prepare is now.

Each year dozens of Americans die after being exposed to the harsh winter elements for too long, but threats are not limited to cold temperatures. In addition, heavy precipitation and getting caught without utilities can cause major problems if you are not prepared.

The NOAA suggests having a battery operated weather radio to stay informed with the latest forecasts. Also, a 3 day supply of non-perishable food and water. As with all storms, making a to-go kit ahead of time can be key in lifesaving situations.

It might seem like overkill, but for teens that have not driven in snow before, practice safe driving techniques and go over how to stop if your car begins to slide.
