Rising trend in addiction to ADD meds

Prescriptions being passed out, sold, and abused

(WPRI) - Addiction experts are seeing an alarming rise in addiction to drugs prescribed for ADD and ADHD.

For those suffering from symptoms associated with Attention Deficit (Hyperactivity) Disorder, medicine like Ritalin or Adderall can help refocus an otherwise scattered mind. However, according to medical professionals, the effects can be similar to cocaine or speed.

Dr. Timothy Wilens, Director for the Center of Addiction Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, warns that "If you're just popping them willy nilly ... that could be potentially dangerous."

Rehab centers nationwide have recently seen an influx in patients coming in for addictions to these meds, which the DEA treats as a schedule two narcotic. Other schedule two drugs include cocaine and Oxycontin.

Officials also point out that selling or giving away these drugs is a felony offense, and could include fines and jail time.
