Protecting personal info during a move

Securing everything takes more than bubble wrap

(WPRI) - With kids out of school and colleges pretty much shut down, summer is a big season for those planning to move.

Before you grab enough boxes and bubble wrap for your things, take the time to secure your personal information. Consumers are especially vulnerable to identity theft during a move, so taking a few extra precautions can help protect your family.

Security experts have a few tips to help those in transition from one place to another:

  • Make a list of accounts that need your updated information
  • Secure laptops and computers with a password
  • Shred sensitive documents
  • Avoid packing government-issued documents

Once you are set up in your new place, go over the list again to make sure you haven't missed anything of importance. Also, confirm that any old accounts are properly closed out to avoid possible theft.

If you ever receive something that looks suspicious, do a little research to make sure it isn't a scam.
