(WPRI) - A plethora of products have hit the market, aimed at helping your digestive system through probiotic infusion.
According to the author of Probiotics for Dummies, Dr. Shekhar Challa, the different strains of bacteria associated with probiotics may also help other ailments. "We know it decreases the incidence of colds. [In] women's health, decreased urinary tract infection, allergies, eczema, [and] weight loss," Challa told us.
With a variety of options now available, including chocolate bars and cosmetics, consumers can look to more than just vitamins and yogurt.
However, while research shows the bacteria found in probiotics is effective, experts say you may want to think twice before buying that fortified skin creme.
Erin Palinski-Wade, a dietician, says since the FDA does not regulate probiotics, consumers really have no idea what they are taking. "Supplements and probiotic foods aren't required to label the dosage or the strain of product they contain," she says.
Make sure you thoroughly research the product first, and talk to your doctor if you are concerned about possible side-effects. For example, experts do not recommend probiotics for those with immune deficiencies.
