Faux flu remedies hit stores nationwide

(WPRI) - With flu season in full swing, scammers have found a way to capitalize on those looking for a quick cure.

According to the Federal Drug Administration, there are plenty of products claiming to treat influenza. However, they say no such legal over-the-counter flu remedies exist.

However, there are two drugs that work to relieve symptoms, Tamiflu and Relenza. While these products will not get rid of the flu, they will help to weaken the effects. Generic versions do not exist, so watch out for fakes.

Experts say anything that promises to prevent or cure the flu is a big red flag.

The FDA agrees, and are going after any untrue claims. With untested products advertising an easy solution, they say it can actually cause you more harm.

Physicians say the best way to prevent influenza is with a vaccine.
