EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- A growing number of runners have stopped lacing up their shoes when they hit the pavement.
That's because the latest trend is barefoot running - eschewing shoes altogether.
Proponents of barefoot running say it's the way humans were meant to run; doctors say there are some medical benefits as well. When running with shoes on, a runner's heel strikes the ground first. A barefoot runner will strike ground with the middle of his foot first, which can help prevent certain injuries.
But barefoot running isn't something to jump into with both feet - running experts say if you're going to try it, ease into it slowly. It may take weeks or months for you to get comfortable and adjust.
A number of clinics and groups supporting the trend have popped up, but it's important to to a little background research on them before joining, as so far there are no certification requirements for such groups.
