Dangers linked to spray-on sunscreen

Sunscreen can catch fire when used near grills

(WPRI) - A Massachusetts man is recovering from 2nd degree burns, after he says he was engulfed in flames after applying Banana Boat sprayable sunscreen and then using his grill.

Chief Ken Finlay of the Cumberland Hill Fire Department says it can happen very easily.

It’s an alcohol-based product with particles that allow higher ignition temperatures and the flames can reach two feet outside the grill.

Chief Finlay says, "Your thought process is I've got to protect my child and you start spraying sunscreen, wind grabs the particles and off they go."

Banana Boat issued a statement regarding the incident in Massachusetts and they say they are unaware of similar cases, but are still investigating.

The Food and Drug Administration is now doing the same and is considering changing the warning labels on sprayable sunscreens.
