Controversial smoking apps hit market

Researchers believe apps encourage smoking

(WPRI) - On the heels of electronic cigarettes, a bunch of new smartphone apps allow consumers another way to light-up without the health risks.

More than 100 pro-smoking apps are currently on the market, ranging from virtual cigarettes to nicotine-themes battery widgets. In fact, one app even lets you roll your own virtual tobacco.

However, researchers with the American Cancer Society believe the apps may promote using the real thing. With little-to-no regulations posted on the apps themselves, making it easy for minors to access the content.

While it is unclear whether or not any tobacco companies are directly involved, some apps do name specific brands of cigarettes.
