EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - A wrongful death suit has been filed against the highly caffeinated Monster energy drink.
The parents of a 14-year-old Maryland girl are suing the company claiming the caffeine in the product caused their daughter to die of a cardiac arrhythmia.
According to court documents, the girl ingested two 24 ounce Monster drinks in 24 hours.
A medical examiner said the girl had a mild underlying heart condition that was aggravated by the caffeine.
Monster energy drinks contain 240 milligrams of caffeine, or seven times the amount of caffeine in a 12 ounce cola.
There are labels on the cans that state the drinks are not recommended for children and people sensitive to caffeine.
The F.D.A. has received five reports of deaths and one heart attack.
The agency is investigating the allegations but says the reports don’t necessarily prove that the drinks caused the deaths or heart attack.
