Safety alert after boy crushed by TV

Local family touched by tragedy shares story

BURRILLVILLE, R.I. (WPRI) - The Consumer Product Safety Commission is issuing a safety alert after a tragic accident claims the life of a Burrillville boy.

Sharon Brunelle and her family reached out to Eyewitness News to share their story for the first time.

"On New Year's Eve his mom found him in his bedroom.  He had sustained fatal head injuries from a TV," Brunelle said.

The death of 3-year-old Brayden Rodgers hit a nerve with his cousin Jocelyn Varin, who has gone the extra step -- securing every appliance and piece of furniture in her home.

"I'm a mother of four and this has brought light to my eyes," said.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission it's an accident that claims the life of a child every two weeks. Two hundred children have died after a television or a piece of furniture fell on them.

Brayden's death is the latest tragedy.

His family is now working to get the word out to other parents.

They are organizing a benefit in March to bring awareness to the dangers of falling furniture.
