(WPRI) -- Hurricane Sandy took out power for more than 100,000 Rhode Islanders alone, and more could be in the state's future with winter right around the corner.
Strong winds and downed trees left a lot of people in the dark, and many used portable generators to get through the storm. Thousands of generators sold exclusively at Costco are now being recalled due to a fuel leak from the carburetor, which poses a fire hazard.
So far, there have been eight reports of the units catching fire and causing serious damage to homes.
Champion Power Equipment is issuing the recall of almost 9,000 generators. It involves two different models, both of which have black frames with black and yellow control panels, a bar handle, and two wheels. The only difference is that model number 41332 has an open frame, whereas model number 41532 has side panels that cover the long sides of the fuel tank.
Costco sold the generators nationwide from December 2011 through July 2012 for a price of $699.
Consumers are asked to stop using the generators and contact Champion Power Equipment immediately for a free repair kit to be installed by an authorized dealer. The unit can also be returned to Costco for a full refund.
For more information about the recall, visit the company's website.
