(WPRI) - A new scam is spreading across Rhode Island.
A puzzling phone call. The caller ID readout says, you're calling yourself! But when you answer it’s a telemarketer or scam artist.
Kathy Rathier said her phone rang a few days ago and was stunned to see the number that appeared. Curious, she picked it up
Come to find out, Kathy was spoofed. Caller ID spoofing can make a call appear to have come from any phone number the caller wishes, even your phone number.
Thankfully Kathy was smart enough not to take the bait and hung up. That's when she called 12 for action.
The good news is Congress recently passed a law that would make spoofing illegal. It's expected to be signed by the end of this year by president Obama.
