(WPRI) - If you own a business here in Rhode Island, you could be the next target for an emerging scam.
Officials say a misleading letter is the source of the scam, which is attempting to cash-in on a business fee law.
The letter claims to be from a company called Rhode Island Corporate Compliance, and cites a state law about filing each year for a $125 fee.
R.I. Secretary of State Ralph Mollis (D) reached out to Call 12 for Action after receiving numerous complaints from local business owners.
He says the most misleading part is "they think they filed ... because it looks like a state seal letter."
The company says to send the fee to an address on Dorrance Street in Providence, but it is actually just a Post Office Box.
We also learned Rhode Island Corporate Compliance is not even a registered company.
Businesses are indeed supposed to file each year, but they need to do so through the Secretary of State's office.
