PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Call 12 for Action has uncovered hundreds of complaints filed against a company that sells these smokeless cigarettes. According to the Better Business Bureau (BBB), this company's "free" offer isn't actually free.
Tired of second hand smoke? Or trying to quite smoking? Smokeless cigarettes are supposed to be a better alternative- no smell, no flame, no ash and in some cases very little nicotine. One company, Direct E-Cig , claims to be the best smoking solution. But the BBB questions whether its business practices are the best
Customers from 44 states have filed more than 360 complaints against Direct E-Cig, Some of those are from Rhode Island and Massachusetts. The customers claim they ordered what they thought was a free starter kit only to find out later that the company billed their credit cards for $100 to $200 more!
In response to the complaints, Direct E-Cig said customers must go through a cancellation process within 15 days, to avoid being charged the full price and avoid future monthly charges and that policy is on its website.
But several customers said they ordered thru direct email solicitations and never saw the cancellation policy.
Even if customers follow the return police exactly, the BBB reports that the so called 'free' trial offer still costs money. The website notes that Direct E Cig charges $7.50 for each opened cartridge and a $10 restocking fee
If you are thinking about taking advantage of any free trial offer, consider this advice first: Be cautious of a free trial offer especially if asked for credit card information/.Also, make sure you understand the cancellation policy. And remember, many of these companies will share your contact information with other 3rd parties
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA ) has warned consumers about potential health risks associated with electronic cigarettes. The agency has said the products can increase nicotine addition in young people and may lead them to try other tobacco products
