Retailers expect spike in sales next month

(WPRI) - School has only been out for a month, but retailers are already preparing for the increase in back-to-school sales.

The National Retail Federation's annual survey predicts the average family with school-age children to spend approximately $688.62. At $85 higher than last year's average, retailers are estimating next month will bring in an additional $30 billion in sales.

Making for the second busiest shopping season of the year, kids and parents alike are gearing up to re-stock for September.

The majority of the $688.62 estimate will likely be on clothing, costing parents roughly $246. Electronics, shoes, and supplies round out the top 4 items purchased in preparation for the return to class in September.

Retailers are hoping the back-to-school season will boost declining sales, but acknowledge that customers will be looking for deals. Discounted items are readily available for the cautious consumer, both online and in-store.
