WARWICK, RI (WPRI) - Tax preparers say they weren't prepared for the huge demand of earlier filers. More people than usual are filing as soon as they get their W-2's.
Melanie Cameron and her husband normally don't file their taxes until the deadline is much closer. However, they're expecting a large refund, and need the money now. The Cameron's are in the process of buying their first house. They plan to use their refund to help cover the down payment. And the Cameron's aren't alone.
Local accountants tell Eyewitness News they are swamped with work. Some have even hired extra help to keep up with demand. Others say they are working late into the night.
Some Rhode Islanders are also filing early because they are
concerned about the state's massive deficit. They're afraid Rhode
Island won't have enough money to cover all of the refunds.
However, the Governor's Office says that everyone who is entitled
to a refund, will get one.
