Crib tent linked to one child's death

Crib tents still sold in stores, despite recall

(WPRI) - Five major retailers are being asked to stop selling “Tots in Mind” crib tents after the product was linked to at least one child’s death.

According to the Consumer Products Safety Commission, the company’s crib and play yard tents can entrap and strangle children if the dome part inverts or if the product becomes partially detached.

Originally recalled back in 2010, the tents have failed 27 separate times since January 1997. In addition to the one reported death, a serious brain injury also occurred from the product.

Following the recall, “Tots in Mind” offered parents a repair kit for defective tents. However, in the two years since, the repair kit is no longer available and the company is no longer in business.

Despite the major recall and “Tots in Mind” completely shutting down, the crib tents were sold at retailers such as Bed Bath and Beyond, Baby’s ‘R Us, Toys ‘R Us, and WalMart.

The recalled tents do not have any model numbers, but can be identified by a “Tots in Mind” tag on the product. If you purchased a tent at any of the retailers mentioned above, you can return the product for a refund or store credit.
