PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Two more unions have accepted Governor Donald Carcieri's contract proposal to state workers.
Members of Local 580 and Local 400 voted to approve the new contract. The agreement requires eight workdays without pay this fiscal year, four next year, and a six-month delay in a promised 3-percent pay raise in 2010.
In return, workers would receive a two-year guarantee of no layoffs and the opportunity to take additional unpaid days off. Governor Carcieri is working to close at $68 million dollar state budget gap.
Council 94, the state's largest workers union has not yet voted on the contract. They expect to cast their vote next week.
