PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - The most winter snow storm that covered the state has helped edge toward a snowfall record for March 2, 2009.
As of noon time on Monday, Providence received 6.7 inches of snow. The record for this date is 7.1 inches, set back in 1996.
According to the National Weather Service at the airport in Warwick there was only 24.5 inches of snow all winter. For this year, we are now twice that amount at 50 inches to date for an entire season.
Rhode Island normally averages around 38 inches, a difference of at least a foot of snow. But that is not even close to the snowiest winter ever. During the winter season between 1995 and 1996 Rhode Island saw a total of 107 inches of snow.
All of this snow has put the strain on cities snow removal budgets. We already know of at least two cities, Warwick and Cranston that are thousands and thousands of dollars over their entire season's budget for plowing.
