RI may be ready for smoke-free outdoor areas

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – A recent survey shows that there is an increased demand for smoke-free outdoor areas throughout the Ocean State.

The Rhode Island Department of Health conducted a survey where more than nine-hundred residents were asked to rate how supportive they would be if different outdoor areas such as beaches, parks, playgrounds, and sports venues would no longer allow smoking.

Overall, residents favored the bans, even residents who identify themselves as smokers.
 
“Smoke-free outdoor areas would not only protect public health, but also reduce cigarette litter, decrease the risk of fire, send a positive message to kids, and create supportive environments for smokers to finally kick the habit,” said Director of HEALTH Michael Fine, MD.  

Some towns have already banned outdoor smoking in specific areas.

Last month, Central Falls passed an ordinance banning smoking on school ground, playgrounds, parks, and public events.  Woonsocket also celebrated their first smoke-free Autumnfest celebration.
