QUONSET, R.I. (WPRI) - How would you like to go on a cruise around the world? It sounds great, right?
Well if you've got the money, the time and you're looking for nothing fancy you could take the trip on a one-of-a-kind ship that was docked here in Rhode Island.
When you think of cruising around the world, you probably think of a cruise ship with pools, nightclubs, casinos and midnight buffets.
"We wanted to get away from the glitz and the 'hurrah'," said Jean Locke.
The ship, the MV Rickmers, was docked at the Port of Davisville at Quonset the past 2 days. John and Jean Locke have cruised in style before. That's not what they wanted from this cruise.
"Been there done that. This one is a little more of an adventure. It's an opportunity to go through both canals and actually right around the world," said John Locke.
The Lockes will be travelling around the world on a 600 foot freighter. The MV Rickmers is one of the largest freighters to ever dock at Quonset. The ship specializes in carrying unusual cargo, like a 200 ton catamaran, the largest sailing catamaran in the world.
The Lockes are 18 days into their 135 day cruise. They'll be spending a lot of time in their private quarters. The Lockes have a room, bigger than many cruise ship rooms; complete with a fridge, lots of windows and a private bath, nd they say the food is pretty good, too.
John said, "It's not like a 5 star restaurant. It's very good food. You get 3 square meals per day. You eat with the officers and the crew. They're a great bunch of people."
They'll spend a lot of time reading and watching movies. But they will also be visiting places like Hamburg, Germany; Genoa, Italy and Shanghai, China. As exciting as that may sound, this cruise is obviously not for everyone. The Lockes encourage people to do their research.
"And you have to remember that the crews' job on the ship is not to watch over us, it's to run the ship and deliver the cargo," said John.
The cruise costs about 100 dollars per day, per person. It's not inexpensive, but it is considerably cheaper than a traditional around the world cruise which can cost between 400 and 18 hundred dollars per day.
