(WPRI) -- Nelly Furtado, the multi-platinum superstar, released her latest album, The Spirit Indestructible, Tuesday, Sept. 18 and joined The Rhode Show to talk about it.
“I write all my lyrics so I try to live my life, fall on my face, and make mistakes so I can write about it. Then the fans can connect to the music,” Furtado states.
The artist's music keeps its eclectic nature by collaborating with a variety of producers from various music genres. She says she worked with hip-hop songwriter and producer Bob Jerkins, veteran metal producer Bob Rock, and numerous others.
Nelly told the Rhode Show exclusively, “My first instrument was the ukulele and then the trombone so I grew up in the orchestra and brass section. For me music was all about community, collaboration and experimentation. For me music has no borders or boundaries.”
She began writing the songs for her latest album during the release of her Spanish album Mi Plan. The Spirit Indestructible will be the first English-language album Furtado produced since 2006's Loose which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart and sold 10 million copies worldwide.
Furtado jokes, “I call [the new album] a friendly punch in the face.”
To her fans, Nelly's music is not only known for its passion and energy, but its message. Her latest album is no exception to this.
“It’s all about this idea that we can overcome anything," she added. "It’s really an anthem in that way.”
At the end of the day, the award winning artist hopes her fans have fun with her music. “This album is all about positivity, youth, good energy, and the relentlessness of the spirit.” Furtado says. “I want people to live this music the way we did when we wrote it. I want them to jump, dance, scream, laugh, cry, love, and vibe to it, and to turn it up very loud everywhere.”
