Candidates stepping up campaign efforts

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI)- The general election is less than a month away and the candidates in the second Congressional District race are stepping up their campaign efforts.

It is a three way race between Democratic Incumbent Jim Langevin, Republican Michael Riley and Independent Candidate Abel Collins.

Candidates are making more and more public appearances as the election nears. Eyewitness News spoke with two of the candidates about recent ads challenging Congressman Jim Langevin's voting record.

District 2 has garnered more attention recently after Riley continues to air several TV ads blaming Langevin for high gas prices. Riley, however, has said this isn't a negative ad.

"I know gas prices are bad, but they exist. They are real. It's a negative thing for people who have to pay those gas prices, I'm just pointing it out", Riley said.

In response to the ad Langevin stated; "I think that all of that is unfortunate especially when the facts are not correct. I'm focused on doing my job and that's trying to get the economy back on track, creating jobs and fighting for a stronger middle class."

Neither Langevin or Independent Abel Collins have yet to air a television ad in Rhode Island.
