NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – After a hard-fought and often contentious campaign, David Cicilline has emerged as the winner of the 1st Congressional District Democratic primary and will now face off against Republican Brendan Doherty in the general election.

Eyewitness News is projecting that Cicilline has defeated businessman Anthony Gemma and perennial candidate Christopher Young.

With 99 percent of precincts reporting at 10:30 p.m., the WPRI.com Results Map shows Cicilline with 62 percent of the vote, Gemma garnered 30 percent and Young 8 percent

Tuesday night marks the end of a tumultuous campaign match-up between Cicilline and Gemma; which included stunning allegations of voter fraud leveled by Gemma against Ciclline, as well as an Eyewitness News debate peppered with personal attacks.

The Cicilline campaign has now turned its attention to Republican Brendan Doherty, who ran unopposed in that party's primary.
