PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP/WPRI) -- The secretary of state's office continues to hand out free state identification to anyone who needs it ahead of the Sept. 11 primary.

A new law requires voters to show ID before they cast a ballot at the polls.

Free IDs are available at these locations and times:

  • Newport, Donovan Manor, 16 Chapel St., Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Warwick, Shalom Apartments, 1 Shalom Dr., Wednesday from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Providence, Elizabeth's Place, 700 Westminster St., Friday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Those who wish to get an ID must bring proof of identity such as a Social Security card, credit or debit card, utility bill or government-issued document.

If you can't make it to one of the sessions listed above for a free voter ID card, you can also visit the Secretary of State's Elections Division office at 148 West River St., Providence, on weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

The Secretary of State's Office has previously held ID sessions across the state in towns like Hopkinton, North Providence, North Kingstown and Burrillville.
