Candidates to square off in Eyewitness News debates

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- As the congressional races heat up in the Ocean State, the candidates will soon be able to duke it out in a series of upcoming debates.

Eyewitness News is partnering with The Providence Journal to air three debates leading up to the November 6 general election.

On Tuesday, Oct. 9, in a special edition of Newsmakers , Congressman Jim Langevin will square off on the issues with Republican challenger Michael Riley in the Campaign 2012 District 2 Congressional Debate. The debate will be moderated by host Tim White and begins at 7 p.m. on FOX Providence.

On Tuesday, Oct. 16, Rep. David Cicilline will face off against challenger Brendan Doherty in the District 1 debate. The debate will also be moderated by Tim White, and he'll be joined by Providence Journal Deputy Editorial Pages Editor Edward Achorn and WPRI.com reporter Ted Nesi . It begins at 7 p.m. on WPRI 12, and will also be streamed live online .

After the televised portion of the District 1 debate, there will be 30 minutes of additional live coverage on WPRI.com . During this time, the candidates will answer questions submitted by viewers.

On Tuesday, Oct. 23, Eyewitness News will host the Campaign 2012 U.S. Senate Debate between Senator Sheldon Whitehouse and Republican challenger Barry Hinckley. Tim White will again moderate, along with Ted Nesi and Providence Journal Political Columnist Edward Fitzpatrick.
